Architect: Mossessian & Partners, London

A spectacular new building has been built on Merchant Square, not far from Hyde Park: this striking ensemble is composed of three acute-angle structures, perfectly composed by the London-based architect Michel Mossessian. Like huge prisms, the structures nestle together. The ingenious vertical stepping of the red heart of the building increases its prominence. It contains an atrium, which produces a thrilling spatial effect, extends through all storeys and is clearly defined as an open space. Impressive views of the city open up at many points behind the patchwork structure of the glass facades that reflect the water in the adjoining canal. Merchant Square stands out as a beacon of change in the architecturally-neglected area around Paddington Station.
