National Grand Theatre in Peking
National Grand Theatre in Peking National Grand Theatre in Peking

Architect: Paul Andreu, Bordeaux

The National Grand Theatre in Peking was designed by the French architect Paul Andreu and is only a stone's throw away from Tiananmen Square. This building rests like a gigantic air bubble on the water of an artificial lake. A homogenous skin of glass and titanium that allows light to flood into the interior, nestles against the convex form of the culture island. Visitors gain access to the spacious open foyer via an underground entrance: the load-bearing structure of filigree steel tubes spans behind the dynamically curving facade of the building. The typical wall/ceiling division is transformed into a completely organic whole.
The National Theatre is reminiscent of the traditional yin-yang motif and is one of the modern architectural attractions of the city. It is a venue for national and international theatre, opera, music and dance performances.
