Municipal Library, Stuttgart D
Architect: Eun Young Yi, Köln, Seoul
Lift&Slide elements as important integral components of the building envelope
Light and reading – these are the guiding themes of the design for the new Stuttgart Municipal Library at Mailänder Platz by the architect Eun Young Yi. In 2014, the American magazine "Time" declared the library of the capital of Baden-Württemberg one of the 20 most beautiful libraries in the world. The external facade of the cube-shaped building consists of translucent glass building blocks, square in form and framed in fairfaced concrete. Behind this lies a glass skin which acts as the technical building envelope. The theme of clarity, emphasised by white surfaces, is reiterated in the interior, particularly at the centre of the library which is defined by a four-storey hall with galleries. Innovative clarity is also evident in the window and door technology which incorporates GU solutions. In addition to the Lift&Slide hardware for the many glass elements, we also supplied lock technology, overhead door closers and escape door control systems.
