Lift&Slide ele­ments as important inte­gral compon­ents of the building enve­lope

Light and reading – these are the guiding themes of the design for the new Stuttgart Municipal Library at Mai­länder Platz by the architect Eun Young Yi. In 2014, the Ame­rican maga­zine "Time" declared the library of the capital of Baden-Würt­temberg one of the 20 most beautiful libra­ries in the world. The external facade of the cube-shaped building con­sists of translu­cent glass building blocks, square in form and framed in fair­faced concrete. Behind this lies a glass skin which acts as the technical building enve­lope. The theme of cla­rity, empha­sised by white sur­faces, is reite­rated in the inte­rior, parti­cularly at the centre of the library which is defined by a four-storey hall with galle­ries. Innova­tive cla­rity is also evident in the window and door tech­no­logy which incorpo­rates GU solu­tions. In addi­tion to the Lift&Slide hard­ware for the many glass ele­ments, we also supplied lock tech­no­logy, overhead door clo­sers and escape door control sys­tems.
