Architect: UN Studio, Amsterdam

A filigree network of stainless steel grids snugly wraps round the curved multi-layer facade of the MUMUTH in Graz. The renowned Amsterdam firm UN-Studio designed an unusual building for music and musical theatre which emits light through a translucent acrylic glass envelope like crystalline glass into the street outside in the evening hours. The structural centrepiece of the house appears already in the foyer: the theatre's two longitudinal walls transition into the torsional 'Twist' descending to the bottom with a pronounced sculpture effect. Walls and ceiling merge together in a dynamic spiral accommodating an elegantly swung staircase. This makes the route to the top of the concert hall an unforgettable spatial experience.
The building for music and musical theatre in Graz is notable for its architecture and acoustics and serves to provide students at the University of Arts with performance and practise facilities and is also used for various events.
