European Central Bank in Frankfurt on the Main

Architect: Coop Himmelb(l)au

The European Central Bank (ECB) erected their new building on the grounds of the former market hall in Frankfurt on the Main. Designed by the Vienna architects COOP HIMMELB(L)AU, the new headquarters of the ECB consist of three major structural elements: the former market hall with its rebuilt interior, 185 m high twin office towers enclosing an atrium with their entire height, and a so-called entrance construction. The entrance building connects the twin towers visually and functionally with the market hall and represents the main entrance in the North of the building complex. It also accommodates the press conference area. The ancient market hall whose fundamental appearance has been maintained serves for the public functions of the ECB such as lobby, visitors centre, conference area, library and staff restaurant. The gross floor area is approximately 185,000 m2.
